Okay, okay, McConaughey isn't middle aged (he was born on November 4, 1969), but he is still cool. You have to appreciate somebody who gets busted for smoking dope while playing the bongo drums naked in his apartment.
I just watched Sahara. Not a great movie, but a fun movie. McConaughey plays Dirk Pitt, the adventurer hero of the Clive Cussler novels. He is definitely not who I picture playing that part when I am reading the books, but the director didn't squeeze him into a pre-defined role. What he apparently did was let Matthew McConaughey be Matthew McConaughey.
MY two favorite roles of his were as Jake Brignance in A Time to Kill, and as Wooderson in Dazed and Confused. If you haven't watched Dazed and Confused, get it NOW! It is the most accurate portrayal of high school in the late 70s and early 80s that has ever been done.
