Middle Age is here!

Which of us ever thinks about middle age as we are running, walking, or tripping through our lives?  All of us can be of different race, creed, height, weight, religion, profession, likes, dislikes and the things that now define us as reaching middle age.  The age when you look back and ask “What if I had…?” and look forward and ask “What’s next and how can I…?”  MasterCard has said it best with their ad slogan “Life comes at you fast!”

We are at an age where we decide if we feel we have reached success or failure with still enough youth in us to change, experience, or redirect more in our lives.  When we ask ourselves internal questions: Who do I love? Who loves me? Do I like what I have done? Do I want to do more? What the heck is a prostate anyway??

Over half the population on the planet has the opportunity to become a middle aged male,  taking into account the cultures that value and promote male children over female children and have taken the mix a little off center.   And although we can say a prayer and stop for a moment of thoughtful silence for those who have been lost before the chance to experience this part of their lives along the way, there are a lot of us here in the middle age of our lives.

I have found myself thinking about this new time in my life.   I have been caught facing the mirror with my shirt off inhaling and strategically putting air into my lungs to inflate my upper chest, flatten my stomach, and recapture the form I once had without holding my breath.  We look at our muscle tone and vow that tomorrow we will begin running, lifting weights, and exercising our bodies to recapture the youth and muscle tone that is still available at our age.  Some of us do it, for some of us this time really never comes.  I prefer to discreetly remove weights from my son’s weight set and bench press.  I convince myself that the 40 lb bar actually adds 100 lbs to the overall weight.  When my 15 year old son asks me to match his 250 lb, 10 rep bench press, I remind him that although I could do it at one time in my life (a lie), right now I am a little out of shape.

A popular Country Music singer says it best for the middle aged man when he sings “I ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was.”  This means don’t count us out, we can still do anything we could have in our youth.  We may just require an aspirin and a nap when we are done.  You can watch the news everyday and see middle aged men in entertainment, business, politics, and even a war making a difference. Life isn’t over; it is just time to decide what is next!

Here at www.middleagedmale.com I am referred to as Bald Jon, which speaks to my folliclely impaired state associated with middle age.  I want to stimulate discussion, find answers to questions, and share things with each of you that others in our age category find in their struggle to define the midpoint in their lives.  Share with us your thoughts, struggles, and triumphs.  Are you a middle aged over achiever or have you already peaked and have begun a premature slide into old age.   I am 43 years old and I prefer to think that I have not yet hit the middle of my life.  Email me at baldjon@middleagedmale.com and let me know what is on your mind, stuck in your head, or just pisses you off.  Until we generate some response and dialog in our forum, I will endeavor to share my middle age thoughts with you.

So save the readers and help us with some input.
